After using an Ameda Purely Yours for 6 years, I recently got the new Ameda Purely Yours Ultra. I have to say I was quite impressed.

Ameda Purely Yours Ultra

The Ameda Purely Yours Ultra is loaded with accessories!

In general, I like the Ameda Purely Yours as a working mom for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost is the strength of the motor. It’s just as strong as the highly marketed Medela Pump in Style Advanced , and you get great results for using it a few times a day, as long as  you’re also nursing. It’s not as efficient as a hospital grade pump which is recommended for heavier usage.

The pump is relatively lightweight and very portable. You can plug it into a regular outlet, use batteries, or plug it into your car — it will work wherever you need it! The Ameda Purely Yours is not too loud, but that’s subjective. It does make noise, but not to the point of being annoying if you’re trying to concentrate on something else.

The Ameda pump can be used for single or double pumping. Double pumping is usually suggested as being the most efficient at stimulating the milk supply to produce more milk, but if for any reason single pumping works better for you, you can still use this pump.

Speed and Suction

While the new Pump in Styles feature a 2-phase letdown, the Purely Yours lets you customize both speed and suction to work the best way for your body. What the Medela’s pump does is use lower suction with frequent speed to stimulate letdown, before slowing down the speed to mimic baby’s pauses after long draws of milk. With the Ameda, you can do this, or any other combination you would like with the turn of the dial. The old Purely Yours had small dials that read cycles and suction, but the new Purely Yours Ultra has slightly bigger dials that read “speed” and “suction”. To turn on the pump, you turn the “suction” dial. You can leave the speed at the setting you found most comfortable in the past.

New Design

The new design of the pump provides for the slightly wider BPA-free bottles. The older pump bottle rests were too small for the BPA-free bottles, but this model fits them comfortably.

This is what my older Ameda Purely Yours looks like.

I also prefer the finish of the newer Ameda Purely Yours Ultra as it’s a smoother material and seems easier to wipe down.

I, and many lactation consultants, prefer the Purely Yours over the PIS for health reasons. The Ameda pump possesses a closed hygenic system which prevents against milk getting into the tubing and motor, which can breed bacteria and mold. As such, with different flanges and accessories, the pump is safe to be used by different people, something that is not the case of Medela’s pumps.

Explanation of various models

There are several Ameda Purely Yours pump models on the market.

Ameda Purely Yours Ultra

The Ultra comes with a large tote bag that is great for business use or even as a diaper bag when not used for pumping. There are many compartments, including penholders, but it has a very chic, professional look on the outside and doesn’t scream “pump inside!”

A feature unique to the Purely Yours Ultra is that it comes with a couple of flange size options. One of the biggest problems in failing to output adequate milk when pumping with a good motor is when the flanges (or horns as referred to by other companies) don’t fit the breast as it should — it’s either too small or too big. This kit allows one to make sure she can have the best fit for her body for a comfortable and efficient pumping session.

The Ultra includes a cooler with 3 ice packs and 6 Ameda bottles that rest well inside the pump, a card with instructions about breast milk storage, an adapter to use with the flange for hand pumping, and an instruction booklet.

The Purely Yours Ultra Box

The box for the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra is big as it needs to hold a whole lot of stuff!

Some of the Ultra bags also have a car adapter, samples of breast pads and/or storage bags, and/or a pad for a clean surface for pumping. I personally have never used such a pad, even though my box did include that.

One thing inside my tote bag that I don’t see mentioned on Ameda’s website [edited: it’s now listed!] is a drawstring bag that I use to bring home my dirty flanges without getting my whole bag wet. I love this feature!

Ameda Purely Yours Backpack

I have also used the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump with Backpack, and I especially liked the fact that the bottom compartment held the motor and AC and car power adapters and zipped up separate from the rest of the backpack. That kit comes with 2 cotton breastpads, but personally, I felt that they bunched up too much.

Ameda Purely Yours Carry All

Ameda Purely Yours with Carry-All

The Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump – Carry All is basically giving a tote bag that is not anything specific to the pump — it’s just a plain tote bag. It comes with the cooler and bottles like any of the Ameda kits, but I’m not convinced it’s worth the extra money just for that. If I wasn’t to buy the Ultra, I’d either get the backpack kit or the pump alone and buy my own bottles (as any standard size bottle fits)/cooler/tote.

But judging from the reviews on Amazon, my opinion is one of many — the Ultra is a GREAT product.

So I set out to find a pump that would give me the best of what I experienced in the other three pumps I own. I wanted the efficiency and convenience of the Medela Free Style, the quietness of the MiPump, and the suction flexibility of the Avent Isis. I think the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra comes as close to anything I’ve read about in accomplishing this task.

This is less expensive than Medela and seems superior.
