Eating light foods and drinking lots of water (spiked with sugar for energy if necessary) is a great way to keep up your energy, especially in a long labor. Some places prohibit it just in case you will need a C-section and there is concern of aspiration. Studies have shown this is not necessary on a general basis. Decide the benefit of keeping nourished and hydrated vs. the potential risk of having a C-section and the risk involved there with aspiration. Times to consider refraining is when there is a very high or definite possibility of having a C-section, serious signs of maternal or fetal distress, or you can not keep anything down and are vomiting. The upside is that if you keep yourself nourished and hydrated, there is much less need for an IV.
